Research:
Giesen-Bloo et al., (2006) Randomized trial (Schema-Focused Therapy vs Transference-Focused Psychotherapy) for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
Type: RCT, long-term follow-up. Main finding: ST produced larger recovery and improvement rates than transference-focused psychotherapy for BPD.
Bamelis, E.M.M., et al., (2014) Multicenter randomized controlled trial of Schema Therapy for personality disorders.
Type: Large multicenter RCT (N≈323). Main finding: ST was more effective than treatment-as-usual/clarification-oriented psychotherapy across several personality disorders.
Arntz et al., (2022) Randomized clinical trial (combined individual + group ST vs group ST vs optimal TAU) for BPD.
Type: Large international RCT (495 participants). Main finding: Combined individual+group ST was superior to optimal TAU and to predominantly group ST in reducing BPD severity.
Taylor, C.D.J., Bee, P., & Haddock, G., (2016/2017) Systematic review: “Does schema therapy change schemas and symptoms?”
Type: Systematic review across mental health disorders. Main conclusion: ST shows promising effects on symptoms and early maladaptive schemas, but evidence on schema-change mechanisms was limited at the time and more rigorous mediation research was recommended.
Zhang et al., (2023) Systematic review and meta-analysis of ST for personality disorders.
Type: Meta-analysis (RCTs and single-group trials). Main finding: ST showed a moderate overall effect for reducing personality disorder symptoms vs controls; group formats often showed larger effects.
Nadort et al., (2009) Implementation study of outpatient ST for BPD in regular mental healthcare (multisite protocol & results).
Type: Implementation study / multisite RCT protocol and outcomes. Main point: ST can be implemented effectively in routine clinical settings; outcomes and dropout comparable to prior clinical trials.
Carter et al., (2013) Randomized clinical trial comparing Schema Therapy and another active treatment (adults with personality problems/depression contexts).
Type: RCT (clinical sample). Main finding: Evidence supporting ST’s effectiveness in complex/dependent personality and depressive presentations (see paper for sample details).
Jacob et al., (2018) Priovi: a Schema Therapy–based eHealth program for BPD (naturalistic single-arm study).
Type: eHealth program evaluation (naturalistic). Main point: Demonstrates feasibility and promising outcomes for a schema-therapy informed online intervention. Useful for digital/implementation perspectives.
Gülüm İ.V., (2018) Dropout in schema therapy for personality disorders (systematic look at attrition).
Type: Systematic/empirical study on dropout. Main point: Reviews dropout rates and factors in ST trials; important when assessing external validity and feasibility.
